Surgeons Make Their Case to Congress for Research Funding

Wednesday, February 25th, 2015

Surgeons Tim Fabian, Martin Croce and Mike Sutherland take a break in the Longworth House Office Building cafeteria between visits. They met with Tennessee and Arkansas Senate and House offices.

Yesterday 35 trauma surgeons, assembled by the Coalition for National Trauma Research, descended on House and Senate offices with a single message: It’s time to provide funding for trauma research that is commensurate with its impact on society.

Making visits to 150 different legislators, the surgeons urged them to support an addition of $30 million in a Department of Defense account that will go toward trauma-related research conducted via a trials network made up of both military and civilian trauma centers.

The National Trauma Institute and five other national trauma organizations created CNTR last year in order to combine resources and voices in the effort to raise awareness of the toll of trauma in the U.S. and the need to fund research that can save lives. They won’t know if this year’s efforts are successful until the completion of the FY 2016 appropriations process sometime toward the end of the summer.
