NTI Testifies Before Senate Appropriates Subcommittee

Wednesday, June 6th, 2012

Sharon Smith, Executive Director of the National Trauma Institute (NTI), testified on June 6th before the U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense to advocate for acceleration of and funding for research into nonā€compressible hemorrhage, the leading cause of potentially survivable deaths in our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines.

Non-compressible hemorrhage describes injuries to the torso, back, neck, and groin that are not amenable to conventional hemorrhage control therapies. Hemorrhage is also responsible for 30 to 40 percent of all deaths following a traumatic injury to civilians.

NTI urged Congress to set aside a much larger portion of DoD medical research funding for the medical conditions which most severely injure and kill our soldiers and maintain or increase funding for non-compressible hemorrhage.
